This Shadow Throws Mad Shade: Shadow Weaver (★★★)

Updated: Feb 19, 2019

Shadow Weaver by MarcyKate Connolly

Emmeline was blessed at birth with magic from a passing comet. Her power is weaving the shadows around her into shapes - from toys to play with to cloaks to conceal herself for eavesdropping. It is a power which both mystifies and terrifies everyone around her. Her only friend is Dar, her own shadow, and Emmeline is the only one who can hear Dar's voice. When mysterious strangers show up promising to "cure" Emmeline of her powers and Dar reveals she is actually a human soul who needs Emmeline's powers to free her and make her human again, Emmeline flees with Dar into the woods. But can she really trust Dar, who is acting very...excuse the pun but...SHADY (hahahahah I'm so sorry)? And who are the soldiers chasing after her - do the mysterious strangers who promised to "cure" Emmeline actually have far more nefarious plans for her?

Shadow Weaver starts off very slow and dull. I found the pretext of a medieval-type kingdom setting and Emmeline's pretentious use of language and even her name a bit childish, awkward, and even annoying near the beginning. The story doesn't get interesting until Emmeline flees the kingdom, begins collecting ingredients for Dar's spell, and meets other people who gained powers from the Cerelia Comet and even then it doesn't pick up pace until around the last 100 pages. However, those last 100 pages were a whirlwind and I couldn't put the book down until I finished it.

Although I definitely feel like the book could have been condensed greatly, the last 100 pages made it super good.
